If you’ve been holding onto your spoiled turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’re about to have a great reason for doing so. That’s because Hellmann, the well-known food products brand, is partnering with Second Harvest, Canada’s largest food rescue organization, for charity during the global pandemic.
The announcement was made earlier this week on Aug 12. This upcoming week, from August 17 at 3 p.m. ET to August 21 at 12 a.m. ET you will be able to visit Hellmann’s Island to drop off your spoiled turnips. For every spoiled turnip, one real meal will be donated to those in need.

Did you know Animal Crossing has a food waste problem? Players buy and sell turnips but the turnips spoil if they aren’t sold in time. We’re turning virtual food waste into real food for people in need. For each spoiled turnip you give us, we donate a real meal to Second Harvest Food Rescue. Our goal: 25,000 meals. Then you can tour our 5-star island, grab some free merch and share a pic. Hellmann’s believes food is too good to be wasted. Even virtual food.
In order to take part in the donation event, you will have to directly message the Hellmann’s Canada account on Twitter. You will be provided a single-use Dodo code so that you can visit the island to drop off your spoiled turnips and explore. You do not have to be located in Canada to participate. As of the writing of this article, it has been stated that they will host a maximum of 100 people per day on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The donation run has a goal of 25,000 meals, but if Animal Crossing: New Horizon‘s power and cultural influence in 2020 is anything to go by, that number will be easily surpassed in a few hours. Less than five months after its release, Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to break records and cultural milestones, proving that it’s bigger than ever. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold well over 22.4 million units, surpassing the sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and becoming the second biggest Nintendo Switch game. It surpassed the lifetime sales of its predecessor, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, in a mere six weeks. And just two weeks ago, pop star icon Selena Gomez performed a song on “Animal Talking,” a late-night talk show hosted by Gary Whitta that exists entirely within Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
The turnip economy is one of the most popular aspects of the Animal Crossing franchise. Players are known to engage with the “Stalk Market” every week. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you can purchase turnips from Daisy Mae on Sundays. You can then sell these turnips for profit at Nook’s Cranny throughout the week at varying prices. If you don’t manage to sell them in the next week, they will spoil.
Normally, this is a source of dejection. But with this donation event, having your turnips go bad will be a wonderful thing for an extremely good cause. So don’t throw away your spoiled turnips from this last week just yet. Instead, consider using them to help those in need.
