While exploring the moon in Destiny 2 Shadowkeep, you might stumble across an unusual Hive enemy called the Trove Guardian. These guys are tough customers, at least early on. In my first encounter with a Trove Guardian, I discovered that it could cut my whole body apart with a single sword swing, so I had to keep my distance as I whittled down its health.
When you do finally manage to take out the Trove Guardian, you’ll get a message informing you that a path has opened. See, unlike most roaming powerful enemies in Destiny 2. the Trove Guardian doesn’t just drop a chest for you to open after you’ve defeated it. No, things are a little more complicated with this guy.
Destiny 2 Trove Guardian Location
Let’s back up a bit, though. You’ll find the Trove Guardian in the Anchor of Light area — though it may also show up elsewhere, we’re not sure yet. Try looking in the area when a public event is active. Once you find it, try to take it on from a good range. Its only attack seems to be its sword, but it’s a very powerful weapon that can take you off guard.
Update (10/15): This week the Trove Guardian is in Archer’s Line at the south end of the area between the Sanctuary and Anchor of Light exits.
Once the Trove Guardian falls, explore the immediate area. You should encounter a long, floating platform. If you ever collected any of the Dreaming City hidden chests, this next part should be familiar. Yes, we’re going to do a bit of a jumping puzzle, though thankfully it’s not too tricky.
Climb onto the floating platform and approach the edge. Look around and you should see another platform just like the one you’re standing on. Repeat that process, carefully jumping and looking for your next platform, and you’ll eventually reach one with a chest on it.
The loot from the chest seems to be about on par with what you’d get for a public event. When I opened it, I received blue gear and a Phantasmal Fragment. The latter is an important resource in Shadowkeep, and is used at Eris Morn’s Lectern of Enchantment to craft new gear. That said, you can also get Phantasmal Fragments from defeating Nightmares, so I don’t think this is going to be anyone’s go-to farming method.
The Trove Guardian is just one of many mysteries in Shadowkeep. We’ll update this information as we learn more.
