Destiny 2 has been offline for most of the day, as Bungie rushes to repair inadvertent damage done to an unknown number of accounts by this morning’s 2.7.1 update. According to Bungie, Destiny 2 was taken offline after it was discovered that some players were missing “some of their Glimmer, Bright Dust, Infusion Materials, and/or other types of game currencies,” including Silver, Destiny 2‘s real-money currency.
As of 2 p.m. Pacific time, Bungie announced that it had “validated a fix for this issue” that requires the “rolling back [of] all player accounts to how they were before Update 2.7.1 went live.” As of 3 p.m. Pacific, Bungie updated that it was still working to implement the fix, but it gave no indication as to when Destiny 2 might be back online. It did, however, specify that all accounts would be rolled back to how they were at 8:30 a.m. Pacific specifically.
“Players may have to redo any progress or quests they completed between 8:30 – 10 AM PST,” Bungie said. “Purchases made between 8:30 – 10 AM PST will need to be redone. Silver spent during that time will be restored. Destiny 2 Silver purchases from the platform store will be added back to player accounts.” Bungie now estimates that Destiny 2 come back online around 7 p.m. Pacific.
Since the rollback was announced, Twitter, Reddit and the official Bungie forums began to swarm with people who claim to have gained massive PVP progress and/or the perfect weapon drop in the few hours that Destiny 2 was online this morning; progress that will now be erased by Bungie’s rollback solution. Other players, regardless of if they’ve been affected by the missing currency issue, are demanding some form of compensation from Bungie for the outage. And then there’s everyone else, who just likes to complain: 
It’s nothing new for people to come out of the woodwork with their absolute worst behavior when a hugely complicated game breaks, but it’s never not disappointing. Don’t be like these people. Instead, consider being like these people:
Which isn’t to say that you’re not allowed to be upset that you can’t play a game you paid for, or that you shouldn’t be annoyed at having to do some quests again, but have a little compassion about it, you know? Destiny 2 has had its fair share of bugs and bungles over the years, but this is the first bout of actual unscheduled downtime that I can remember. Both the official thread and Reddit’s megapost about the issue are replete with people decrying Bungie as not caring enough about its players, and to those people I ask: What isn’t being done right now that you want to have done?
Honestly, when you’re frustrated by or angry at an inconvenience, ask yourself this question. I do it all the time, and it has saved me so much unnecessary mental and cardiovascular stress. And if you find yourself answering the question with “Well, this shouldn’t have happened in the first place,” that can be a good cue to think about where your expectations are at. Just, you know, think about why you care so much about the things you’re upset over. Life is really short.
