One of the scariest parts of playing any good RPG is the fear you may harbor of potentially losing beloved characters you get to know through quests or those you travel alongside. When I fully immerse myself in a large-scale open-world experience, I often catch myself wondering whether or not my companions can perish and whether a character's death, if possible, will be permanent. Capcom's new sequel certainly wouldn't be an exception, but thankfully, we already know what to expect when it comes to the Dragon's Dogma 2 characters and if they can die.
However, a bit of nuance accompanies the answer to this question regarding Dragon's Dogma 2 NPCs and their potential deaths. In a recent interview from 4Gamer with the long-awaited sequel's producer, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and director, Hideaki Itsuno, we learn why. Itsuno states that in-game, "NPCs may die." He also clarifies that if and when characters do die, "they will not come back to life." Instead, you will be able to find the bodies of the dead at the morgue.
Much like in the original RPG, you can also choose to use a Wakestone on any of the dead Dragon's Dogma 2 characters. It's important to note that you can't wait for too long to save the NPC you may need though, whether it be for a quest or something else that they are central to. Itsuno further explains, "Bodies that are transferred to the morgue do not remain there forever." Instead, the deceased characters are "buried within a few days" following their death and subsequent arrival in the morgue.
"If that happens," the director says, "it will be impossible to bring them back to life." In other words, you have a limited amount of time to go and resurrect a dead character. As there is only one save slot in the new RPG, you definitely won't want to miss the short window between Dragon's Dogma 2 NPCs dying and their burial to save them. Unlike in the first game, you won't see any immortal or protected characters magically pop back up to life after a while it seems.
