What is Dragonsplague in Dragon's Dogma 2?

If you're wondering what Dragonsplague is and how it affects your Pawns in Dragon's Dogma 2, here's what you need to know.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is here over a decade following its RPG predecessor, bringing with it a variety of new mechanics that are absent from the original game. From widespread collectibles to more curious features, the long-awaited sequel is packed to the brim with elements even longtime Dragon's Dogma fans may struggle to recognize. One such new experience is that of the Dragonsplague, a mysterious illness that affects certain Pawns and follows them beyond the Rift.

When you first hire one of these infected Pawns, you may be worried about what this Dragonsplague affliction actually entails. Is it deadly? Will it spread to your Pawn? Do you need to worry? You may even avoid hiring one such Pawn if you see that they're carrying this plague. The game doesn't provide much information about the Dragonsplague, leaving you to wonder about its implications.

No need to worry if you're carrying an infected party member with you as you play, however. We've got you covered here with everything we know about Dragon's Dogma 2 Dragonsplague, including how it manifests in Pawns and what it may mean for both themselves as well as the rest of your traveling group.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Dragonsplague Explained

Capcom describes the Dragonsplague illness as a contagious one manifesting much like any other disease would. It can only affect Pawns, and it seems to do so when said Pawns are traveling throughout the Rift between worlds from one master to another Arisen player. Despite its scary name, however, carrying or contracting the Dragonsplague doesn't actually kill or even weaken a Pawn. Instead, it manifests as a buff of sorts.

Almost unbelievably, Pawns that carry the Dragonsplague disease in its early stages display remarkable performance and skill, outdoing their former "healthy" selves. They become more courageous, which is reflected in their speech as well as in their actions and behavior. Infected Pawns are far bolder than before and much more capable of turning the tide of a difficult battle with their sheer newfound strength.

In terms of their changed appearance, Pawns that carry the Dragonsplague disease don red eyes and appear to emit dark, shadowy smoke almost as though they are carrying some sort of vampire-esque affliction. As the disease progresses, though, you may need to start worrying. While the pawns do indeed become stronger temporarily during the Dragonsplague's beginning stages, it's important to note that the illness will indeed eventually reach a terminal point.

Once it progresses enough, folklore dictates that the Dragonsplague will result in a devastating calamity. How this plays out or what this means for the Pawn and their party remains unclear, but Capcom's own footage may hold the key to answering such questions. It seems that infected Pawns end up transforming into sickly-looking dragons themselves, marking the end stage of the disease, in which case you and your remaining Pawns must fight to kill the one suffering from Dragonsplague's unforgiving final form.
