10 Rarest Hairstyles And How To Obtain Them

Get your style on with these 10 rare FFXIV hairstyles.

Final Fantasy XIV is filled with things to collect and customize your character with, from flashy armor and weapons to build your perfect glamour, to cute minions to accompany you on your travels, to rare titles to show off your proudest achievements. But one category that can have a huge impact on your character’s appearance — hairstyles.

Like other collectables in FFXIV, hairstyles can come from different sources spanning the plethora of side-content the game has to offer, making some more difficult to obtain than others. Based on data from FFXIV Collect, we’ve put together this guide on how to collect the 10 rarest hairstyles in the game as of March 2024.

Omitted from the list are premium hairstyles and limited-time hairstyles only purchasable from the online Mog Station store, and the Strife hairstyle which can only be obtained as a reward for winning contests or sweepstakes held by Square Enix.

Controlled Chaos

Our list begins with the 10th rarest hairstyle in the game, Controlled Chaos. This hairstyle is a reward from the Ishgard Restoration, a crafter and gatherer focused activity which can be unlocked after completing the Heavensward MSQ quest “Litany of Peace”. Once done, the Ishgard Restoration is available from the quest “Towards the Firmament”.

After gaining access to The Firmament, you’ll have two options for obtaining Controlled Chaos. The first is to obtain Skybuilders’ Scrips, or participating in limited time Fêtes. Fêtes can also rarely award the hairstyle outright as an item from Fête Presents. After obtaining 1,800 Skybuilders’ Scrips, Modern Aesthetics - Controlled Chaos can be purchased from Enie, located in The Firmament (X:12.0, Y:14.0).

Those with excess gil looking to skip the grind will be happy to know this hairstyle is available to purchase from other players via the market board.

Saintly Style

Another hairstyle obtained via the Ishgard Restoration. Like Controlled Chaos, Modern Aesthetics - Saintly Style can be purchased for 1,800 Skybuilders’ Scrips from Enie, located in The Firmament (X:12.0, Y:14.0), obtained as a rare random reward from Fête Presents, or purchased from other players via the market board. See the entry on Controlled Chaos above for more information on unlocking and participating in the Ishgardian Restoration.

Early to Rise

One of two hairstyles on this list obtained via the Bozjan Adventuring Forays, unlocking the Early to Rise hairstyle requires players to have completed the Shadowbringers MSQ quest “Old Enemies, New Threats” as well as the Stormblood Alliance Raid series, Return to Ivalice. This allows you to accept “Hail to the Queen”, the first in a series of quests to unlock the Bozjan Southern Front.

Once you’ve gained access, you’ll have to progress through the Bozjan Southern Front to unlock Delubrum Reginae and Zadnor. Delubrum Reginae provides you with Bozjan Gold Coins, while the Dalriada encounter found in Zadnor provides you with Bozjan Platinum Coins. After obtaining five gold coins and 30 platinum coins, players can speak to the Resistance Supplier in Zadnor (X: 35.9, Y: 34.2) to purchase Modern Aesthetics - Early to Rise.

This hairstyle is also available for purchase from other players on the market board.

Practical Ponytails

Practical Ponytails is a reward obtained from the Island Sanctuary, side-content allowing players to develop an idealistic island by crafting and gathering exotic items. Unlocking the Island Sanctuary requires players to first complete the Endwalker MSQ quest “Endwalker”, and then the quest “Seeking Sanctuary”.

As you progress your island by completing visions and constructing buildings, you’ll be rewarded with a currency called Seafarer’s Cowries which can be exchanged with the Horrendous Hoarder at (X: 12.6, Y: 28.3) for a variety of items. For 6,000 Seafarer’s Cowries, Modern Aesthetics - Practical Ponytails can be purchased.

Fashionably Feathered

This hairstyle is a reward purchasable with Wolf Marks, the currency rewarded for participating in PvP activities. PvP can be unlocked as early as level 30 and only requires that you be part of a Grand Company, with the quest to unlock PvP differing depending on if you’re a member of the Immortal Flames, the Maelstrom, or the Twin Adders. Once completed, players can unlock the individual PvP formats: Crystalline Conflict from the quest “The Crystal (Line's) Call”, Rival Wings from the quest “Earning Your Wings”, and Frontlines from the quest “Like Civilized Men and Women” which again differs depending on if you’re a member of the Immortal Flames, the Maelstrom, or the Twin Adders.

After unlocking PvP, participating in any PvP mode rewards you with Wolf Marks. 18,000 Wolf Marks can be exchanged with the Mark Quartermaster at Wolves’ Den Pier (X: 4.4, Y: 6.0) to obtain Modern Aesthetics - Fashionably Feathered.

Tall Tails

Like Practical Ponytails before it, the Tall Tails hairstyle is obtained from interacting with the Island Sanctuary, purchased for 6,000 Seafarer’s Cowries. For more information on unlocking and progressing your island, check out the entry for Practical Ponytails above.

Ambitious Ends

Modern Aesthetics - Ambitious Ends is a reward obtainable through the Variant Dungeon Mount Rokkon, a new type of instanced PvE content with branching paths chosen by the players. To unlock this dungeon, players will need to have first completed the Endwalker MSQ quest “Endwalker” before accepting the quest “An Odd Job”. Once both are finished, “Mononoke Aware” becomes available to unlock Mount Rokkon.

A Rokkon Potsherd is rewarded for killing the first boss on any path, while two Rokkon Potsherds are rewarded for killing the second. After obtaining six total potsherds, Ambitious Ends can be purchased from Trisassant in Old Sharlayan (X: 12.0, Y:13.3).

Wind Caller

Wind Caller is the second hairstyle on this list obtainable from the Bozjan Adventuring Forays. For more information on how to unlock these areas, check out the entry above for Early to Rise, or our dedicated guides on unlocking the Bozjan Southern Front, and progressing through Bozja.

Unlike Early to Rise, Wind Caller is purchased using Bozjan Clusters, a currency item randomly dropped from 4th Legion enemies. While they’re present in both the Bozjan Southern Front and Zadnor, farming in the southern front is recommended since it’s more densely populated with 4th Legion mobs. Once you’ve collected 150 Bozjan Clusters, you can exchange them with the Resistance Quartermaster in the Bozjan Southern Front (X: 14.2, Y: 29.6) to purchase Modern Aesthetics - Wind Caller.

Like with Early to Rise, Wind Caller can alternatively be purchased for gil from other players via the market board.

The Bold and the Braid

Similar to Ambitious Ends, the Bold and the Braid is obtained from a Variant Dungeon, but this time the dungeon is Aloalo Island. To unlock Variant Dungeons, players will need to finish the Endwalker MSQ quest “Endwalker” followed by the sidequest “An Odd Job”. After completion, the quest “Stranger from Paradise” becomes available to unlock Aloalo Island.

As with Mount Rokkon, defeating the first boss on any path reveals a treasure chest rewarding one Aloalo Potsherd, and defeating the second boss provides two potsherds. Six total potsherds can be traded to Trisassant in Old Sharlayan (X: 12.0, Y:13.3) to obtain Modern Aesthetics - The Bold and the Braid.

A Close Shave

The rarest hairstyle in the game, A Close Shave, is a randomly obtained reward from the Deep Dungeon Eureka Orthos. Unlocking Eureka Orthos will require you to have completed the Endwalker MSQ quest “Endwalker”, as well as complete floor 50 of the original Deep Dungeon, Palace of the Dead. Once those conditions are met, the quest “Delve into Myth” becomes available to unlock Eureka Orthos.

Modern Aesthetics - A Close Shave can be found inside Bronze Sacks which can be obtained by briefly standing on invisible, randomly located markers within Eureka Orthos floors 1-30. These markers can be revealed using a Pomander of Intuition, although not every floor will contain a marker. Once you’ve obtained a Bronze Sack, the contents can be retrieved by speaking to Valeroine at the Eight Sentinels in Mor Dhona (X:34.9 Y:19.1).

Since Bronze Sack rewards are random, it may take some time before you obtain the hairstyle. Players wanting to bypass the randomness of the process can instead purchase this hairstyle from other players with gil via the Market Board.
