Final Fantasy XIV diverges from many traditional MMOs by featuring a linear main story presented through Main Scenario Quests (MSQ). The MSQ not only guides new players through the story, but serves as the game's primary form of progression as well, providing major gear upgrade rewards, unlocking many of the game's Dungeons and Trials, and serving as a prerequisite for various forms of optional side content.

The base of FFXIV, A Realm Reborn, is infamous for having a lengthy MSQ, receiving an update in Patch 5.3 to streamline the quest chain and improve story pacing, followed by additional changes to modernize old Dungeons and allow players to tackle them solo with a group of NPCs.
