FFXIV Hunting Log Guide

Learn about the Hunting Log, a great too for levelling up alternative jobs!

In Final Fantasy XIV, each basic class and Grand Company has a laundry list of monsters and foes for you to slay for some bonus experience points. Compiled into a menu called the Hunting Log, these kill quests can be a great way to get bonus experience, earn Grand Company Seals, or just fill the time while you’re waiting for the Dungeon queue to pop.

Unlocking the various levels of Hunting Log can be a little unintuitive, and the Grand Company Hunting Logs require joining the respective Grand Company. Below is a guide to everything you need to know about the Hunting Log so you can complete it and grab that essential experience.

How to unlock Hunting Logs

There are 12 total Hunting Logs, nine linked to the basic classes from A Realm Reborn, and one for each Grand Company. Each class (Gladiator, Marauder, Lancer, Pugilist, Rogue, Archer, Thaumaturge, Arcanist, and Conjurer) receives its Hunting Log when you first unlock it. To view the Hunting Log, you can press the H key on your keyboard by default, or select it in the Logs section of the Main Menu.

Each class' Hunting Log has five ranks with 10 targets. To unlock the next rank of a Hunting Log, you’ll need to complete all 10 of the targets. Each rank covers roughly 10 levels, giving you targets up to level 50 to slay. You’ll need to be the correct class or linked job to complete the target, but other than that there are no restrictions - you can be higher or lower level than the target and still get the experience and complete the log.

To find the target of the Hunting Log, you can hover over its icon in the log. This will tell you where the target is currently located, although only a general location. Head to the location, and you’ll be able to identify your target with a small symbol above their name. Defeat the required number of targets and you’ll complete that entry in the Hunting Log.

The primary reward for completing the Hunting Log is experience. Each target grants a large amount of experience for completing it, and completing a Rank also rewards a lump-sum of EXP. You can earn dozens of levels of experience completing these logs, and they can be a great way to level up quickly, especially for alternative jobs and classes.

Grand Company Hunting Log Guide

Grand Company Hunting Logs unlock once you’ve joined a Grand Company. The ability to do this unlocks after completing the Main Story Quest (MSQ) called “A Hero in the Making."

Unlike the conventional Hunting Log, Grand Company Hunting Logs primarily focus on higher level enemies (for A Realm Reborn at least) who are from the beastmen tribes, or within Dungeons. There are only three ranks, and the rewards for each entry are Grand Company Seals rather than experience. However, you are required to complete the Grand Company Hunting Log to level up your Grand Company Rank, so they’re worth doing. Additionally, the enemies do offer good experience.

Why use the Hunting Log?

As mentioned, the primary reward for Hunting Logs is experience, and company seals for Grand Company Hunting Logs. However, completing each class Hunting Log also rewards you with an Achievement and a Master Class Ring for your job. Completing the Grand Company log rewards an achievement and a Mammet minion depending on your Grand Company of choice.

Overall, with the abundance of experience, and the incentive to head out and farm enemies in various areas, the Hunting Log is one of the quickest and best ways to level up alternate classes through level one to level 50. Besides this, the Grand Company Hunting Logs are an important part of leveling up each Grand Company Rank to maximum level.
