In FFXIV, General-purpose Jet Black Dye is a freely attainable deep, black dye for clothes and weapons. The item is consumable. Meaning one “pot” of General-purpose Jet Black Dye is permanently used up when dying a particular item (e.g. a helmet). Thus, multiple pots of General-purpose Jet Black Dye are needed to color a character’s entire armor set using the color. This shade is typically a bit darker and “cleaner” than other black dyes, as well, such as Soot Black Dye.
There is also a paid version of this dye, simply called Jet Black Dye, available for real money from the Mog Station online store. Normal Jet Black Dye costs $1 USD for one pot or $7.50 USD for a pack of 10 (the same price as all other paid FFXIV dyes).
Despite being available in-game, General-purpose Jet Black Dye, is extremely rare. It can only currently be acquired through three methods: Lockboxes, Venture Coffers, and Fête Presents. All of which are essentially loot boxes with random rewards.
Lockboxes can be acquired from Heaven-on-High, Palace of the Dead, or the Bozjan Southern Front / Zadnor.
In the case of Bozja and Zadnor, Southern Front Lockboxes are dropped by FATEs and Critical Engagements. They can also be purchased from the Resistance Historian NPCs in the Bozjan Southern Front (X: 15.0, Y: 29.1) and Zadnor (X: 34.6, Y: 34.9). The currency needed for the exchange is Field Notes (a type of collectible also dropped by certain FATEs).
Venture Coffers are an exceptionally rare reward sometimes gained via Quick Exploration ventures performed by Retainers.
Finally, Fête Presents are rewards given by Fêtes — special FATEs only available in The Firmament of Ishgard. They appear in players’ inventories after successfully completing a Fête and can be opened immediately.
Because of its high degree of popularity, and extreme rarity, General-purpose Black Dye is often sold for exceptionally high prices on the Market Board across all servers. Thus, Jet Black Dye is nearly always one of the most popular purchases listed on the Mog Station. It allows players to sidestep the grind and virtual expense.
