It’s been almost three years since the last time it appeared in-game, but Final Fantasy XIV’s Dragon Quest X crossover special event could be returning as per a hint in the game’s most recent patch notes. The 6.58 FFXIV patch notes, which were released on March 19, featured a bug fix for the seasonal quest “Breaking Brick Mountains.”
The note, which reads “An issue after completing the seasonal quest "Breaking Brick Mountains" wherein players were unable to repurchase the item Thug's Mug from the recompense officer,” refers to the main quest from the Dragon Quest X crossover event. The timing of the fix, and the fact that this event hasn’t been replayed for several years could suggest the DragonQuest event is making a return.

This would be great news for players who missed the last edition of the Dragon Quest X event. Items from the crossover, including the King Slime Crown, have become highly sought after in the wake of the death of Dragon Quest character designer Akira Toriyama. Following the sad news of Toriyama’s death, FFXIV players gathered in mourning in-game, with many donning Dragon Quest apparel.
It’s also the ideal timing for the return of the event. Square Enix has been replaying many past seasonal events as of late, with the Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy XI collaborations getting reruns so far in 2024. And it would be a nice chance for FFXIV players to continue to pay homage to Akira Toriyama.
The Breaking Brick Mountains Dragon Quest X and FFXIV collaboration event first ran in January 2014 to promote the release of the latest Dragon Quest game. It repeated later that year, before not returning until November 2017. It repeated again in July 2020, and for fifth time in October 2021. During the event, players take part in FATEs to defeat Brickmen in return for currency that can be traded for minions and headgear, including the King Slime Crown.
Still, there’s nothing solid to confirm the event is returning, but putting in time to fix a quest that players currently can’t play (although can view the cutscenes for in The Unending Journey if they previously took part) doesn’t make much sense. As a result, keep your eyes peeled for a potential return of this Dragon Quest event.
