Last year, Final Fantasy XIV fans were ecstatic to discover that they could now bring their Eorzean adventures to the world of pen and paper roleplaying with the reveal of the FFXIV Tabletop Role Playing Game (TTRPG). Since then, word on development and release has been pretty quiet, until today when it was revealed a series of trial sessions are set to take place in Tokyo in February.
News of the trial session playtests was revealed in a post on the FFXIV TTRPG’s official social media account, and was shared by the FFXIV JP Twitter. In the post, it was outlined that Saturday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 18, would see trial sessions begin in Tokyo.
Interested fans would have to apply through the game’s website. Slots appear to be very limited, as just 200 total people will get a chance to trial the game. Each trial session will apparently take around 75 minutes, during which players will be guided through an adventure by on-hand staff in groups of four.
This will be the first time the TTRPG will be playable outside of the Tokyo Fan Festival earlier this year, which saw a similar set of trials. Those sessions appeared to pit players against a group of Amalj'aa. Other pictures from the Fan Fest showed a Ifrit standee, suggesting the FFXIV TTRPG Starter Set will feature an adventure where the players are tasked with dealing with the summoning of Ifrit by the Amalj'aa.
While the February trial sessions in Tokyo are the only ones with dates given, the post also stated that tests would come to Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, and Fukuoka. Unfortunately, no non-Japan events have been scheduled, and the English version of the site makes no reference to any trials.
However, with trials and playtests upcoming, it could signal that the FFXIV TTRPG is not far from release. The pre-order page still lists May 2024 as the release date, but states it is approximate. With the game being shared with the public, perhaps that date will be accurate.
