How LEGO Fortnite XP Works

How XP works in LEGO Fortnite and all of the best ways to earn it.

Despite being a game within the broader Fortnite launcher, LEGO Fortnite feels like a distinct experience. But there's still a lot of overlap in terms of progression. Here's a breakdown of how XP works in LEGO Fortnite and how it counts toward your broader Fortnite Battle Pass.

How XP Works in LEGO Fortnite

All the experience you earn while playing LEGO Fortnite is the same XP that advances your battle pass, and your player character doesn't level up in any traditional fashion. Collecting resources, building structures, and defeating enemies don't directly earn you any XP, but doing all these things helps you progress.

There are two primary ways to earn XP in LEGO Fortnite: you earn passive XP for playtime and Quests you can complete for bonus XP or Battle Pass levels.

Playing LEGO Fortnite, whether in Survival or Sandbox mode, earns you 30,000 XP every 15 minutes of gameplay, up to a daily cap of 420,000 XP. That equates to about five levels. Plenty of players were going AFK for long periods to grind XP after LEGO Fortnite launched in December 2023, but Epic Games patched that out with the v29.10 update when an AFK Timer was added to the game.

The other way to earn XP in LEGO Fortnite is to complete Quests. Some reward XP, whereas others grant entire Battle Pass levels, which is even better.

LEGO Fortnite Quests

Head over to the Quests tab in the LEGO Fortnite lobby, and you can complete various in-game tasks to earn tons of bonus XP. In general, you'll more than likely complete most of these as long as you play the game and try to explore/craft/fight everything you see.

Try LEGO Fortnite!

The starting Collection of quests is called Try LEGO Fortnite! and each grants an entire Battle Pass level. They include the following:

  • Create and play in Sandbox mode (0/1)
  • Build a crafting bench in Survival mode (0/1)
  • Find and enter Caves in Survival mode (0/1)
  • Get a village rating of 4 in Survival mode (0/1)

For the first, all you have to do is create a Sandbox world. You must start a Survival mode world and progress for the other three. The crafting bench recipe is unlocked after you craft a Campfire, and you'll need 3 Wood and 5 Granite to build it. You'll have to do some exploring to find a cave, which appears on the map as a mountain icon with a hole in it.

To upgrade your village to a rating of 4, you'll have to spend the following resources:

  • Level 2 - 15 Granite, 15 Wood
  • Level 3 - 20 Granite, 10 Planks
  • Level 4 - 25 Granite, 15 Planks, 10 Knotroot

To get Planks, you must construct a Lumber Mill (8 Wood, 15 Granite) and use it to process Wood. To get Knotroot, upgrade your Crafting Bench to Uncommon tier then craft an Uncommon Forest Axe. That can be used in caves to harvest Knotroot

Freeplay

The Freeplay collection includes six quests, all of which must be completed in a Sandbox world. Each quest grants the player 2,000 XP. Completing all six nets an extra 15,000.

  • Build a Dynamic Platform in a Sandbox World. (0/1)
  • Build Balloons, Thrusters, or Wheels on Dynamic Platforms in a Sandbox World. (0/12)
  • Complete a Shogun Palace build in a Sandbox World. (0/1)
  • Add Creatures to your inventory in a Sandbox World. (0/6)
  • Use the Fly ability in a Sandbox World. (0/1)
  • Use an Activation Switch in a Sandbox World. (0/3)

Resources are unlimited in Sandbox mode, so you can easily progress your way through this one like an itemized list.

Try Fishing

The Gone Fishin' update came to LEGO Fortnite in early 2024, adding fishing to the game. To encourage players to try it out, there's a quest collection focusing entirely on fishing. Like with all quests, each task grants 2,000 XP, and completing a set grants another 15,000.

Go Fish!

  • Craft a Fishing Rod in a Survival World. (0/1)
  • Eat Simple Sushi in a Survival World. (0/1)
  • Fish using a Bait Bucket in a Survival World. (0/4)

The recipe for a Common Fishing Rod is unlocked as soon as you craft Cord at a Spinning Wheel with 5 Vines. Catch some fish and run it through a Food Processor to get Fish Fillet. Combine that with Wheat Grain in your grill to make Simple Sushi. Simply having a Fish Fillet and Food Processor will unlock the recipe for a Common Bait Bucket. Run that fillet through the Food Processor to craft it.

Master Fishing

  • Catch fish at night in a Survival World. (0/3)
  • Catch fish in the Ocean in a Survival World. (0/3)
  • Catch fish in the Frostlands in a Survival World. (0/3)
  • Craft a rare Fishing Rod in a Survival World. (0/1)
  • Catch any color Legendary Flopper in a Survival World. (0/1)

Most of these involve fishing in different areas of the world at different times. The recipe for a rare Fishing Rod (3 Flexwood Rods, 1 Drawstring, 2 Wool Thread, 3 Sand Claws) unlocks as soon as you create Flexwood Rods. Catching a Legendary Flopper is the crowning achievement in fishing. You'll have to upgrade your Crafting Bench to Epic and then craft an Epic Fishing Rod. You'll also have to craft an Epic Bait Bucket. Legendary fish always have a unique animation when it's time to reel it in.

Survive and Thrive

The Survive and Thrive collection was added in Chapter 5, Season 2. It features two bundles: Dry Valley and Master Navigator. Like other collections, each task awards the player with 2,000 XP and completing the bundle grants another 15,000. All of these must be done in Survival Mode.

Dry Valley

  • Craft a Cool-Headed Charm in a Survival World (0/1)
  • Upgrade a Crafting Bench to "Rare" or "Epic" in a Survival World (0/1)
  • Eliminate a Brute in Survival World (0/1)
  • Upgrade a Dry Valley village to level 10 in a Survival World (0/1)

Find a Dry Valley biome in your Survival World and establish a Village there. Work towards leveling it up and exploring the surrounding area. You'll have to upgrade your Crafting Bench to Rare, but when you reach Uncommon, you'll unlock the recipe for the Cool-Headed Charm (3 Silk Thread, 1 Marble, 3 Sand Shell), which will help with the area's hot temperatures. The large Brute enemies spawn and patrol random areas, so finding and eliminating one is largely left up to chance.

Master Navigator

You must craft three items to complete these tasks: the Spy Glass, Compass, and Glider.

  • Craft a Spy Glass in a Survival World (0/1)
  • Craft a Compass in a Survival World (0/1)
  • Craft a Glider in a Survival World (0/1)

First, you'll have to reach a Dry Valley desert biome or beach and use a shovel to dig in the ground. This unlocks the recipe for Glass. Then, use a Metal Smelter to refine the sand into Glass. Once you do that, the Spy Glass (4 Glass, 1 Knotroot Rod) and Basic Compass (2 Glass, 1 Wolf Claw) recipes will be unlocked. The recipe for a Glider (8 Flexwood Rods, 4 Wool Fabric, 4 Silk Fabric) is unlocked when you upgrade your Crafting Bench to Rare.
