Game of Thrones Sequel Series Will Focus on Jon Snow

The series is in development at HBO.

“You know nothing, Jon Snow,” is the consistent refrain and joke from Game of Thrones. Apparently, we are the ones who know nothing, however, as Jon Snow is the one who’s winning. The character will be the focus of a sequel series for Game of Thrones.

That news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which reports that HBO has begun early development on the series. Kit Harrington is already attached to take up the role once again. This is early days, as there’s no lead writer, showrunner, or executive producer attached. That also means we have no clue what the show will be about.

The sequel series means fans can look forward to seeing Harrington’s dour mug in two genre properties: he’ll be returning in this series and he plays Dane Whitman, the Black Knight, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His first appearance in that role was in Eternals.

Jon Snow seems to be the wrong choice for a sequel series, but Game of Thrones’ final season was so dire that there’s nowhere to go but up. At the very least, there’s time to dive into Snow’s revealed parentage and he can perhaps have a love interest who is not his aunt. I probably would’ve gone with Arya Stark on the high seas, but that probably would’ve been pretty expensive.

This is not the only Game of Thrones spinoff. The first is House of the Dragon, a prequel series following the rise of House Targaryen almost 200 years prior to the event of Thrones. The series has been shot already and will be released on August 21, 2022. There are several other series in development as well, including one based on Thrones creator George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novella. There are also three animated projects, one of which looks to focus on The Golden Empire of Yi Ti, the region of Martin’s world inspired by Imperial China.
