Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX is a Pokemon game, so naturally there will be one question on everyone’s minds: when can you get more pocket monsters, and how? The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games work a little differently from the mainline games, so instead of capturing in Pokeballs against their will, you’ll instead need to befriend and recruit them. How do you go about getting some new friends to join your Rescue Team? Our Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX recruitment guide will walk you through the process.
How to Recruit Pokemon in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX
You’ll be able to recruit Pokemon to your Rescue Team after the events at Mt. Steel. After saving Diglett, two Magnemite will want to join your team, but they won’t be able to because you don’t have any camps available. Go into town and talk to Wigglytuff, and you’ll unlock six camps, with the ability to create more, for a price.
From this point forward, any Pokemon you defeat in a dungeon will have a change of joining you. This is when you recruit a Pokemon. You need to safely get the recruit out of the current dungeon in order to have them actually join your team though. If they faint and you don’t have the means to revive them before escaping, then you’ll be out of luck!
Recruits work a little differently than they did in the original titles. Recruited Pokemon will actually join your party and fight alongside you while in the dungeon, and you can choose to recruit them once you exit the dungeon. You can have a total of eight party members traveling with you in a dungeon (including recruits), so you can really buff up your party with recruits if you’re having trouble completing the dungeon. You don’t even have to recruit them afterwards! Although, that is a little bit rude.
However, it’s not just beating them and getting them out of the dungeon that matters in recruiting Pokemon. You also need the correct Camp for them to join.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX Camps
There are a huge number of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX camps to unlock, and they’re very important if you want to recruit a variety of Pokemon. And who doesn’t? Gotta catch ’em all and all that. Each camp will correspond to a certain type of Pokemon, so just having some camps doesn’t matter, you’ll need the correct camp for the type of Pokemon you’re trying to recruit. In short, if you want a Dratini but don’t have the Dragon Cave unlocked, you’re out of luck.
Thankfully, this isn’t a total guessing game. When a Pokemon asks to come with you, you can see what camp they like along with their other stats. That way, you can check to see if you have their camp before even recruiting them. If you don’t happen to have the correct camp but have a Wigglytuff orb, you can use it to summon Wigglytuff in the dungeon and purchase the camp before leaving. Of course, you need to have enough money to do so. Make sure to keep your funds in mind before using the orb.
Most camps are purchased from Wigglytuff, but others can be unlocked by recruiting certain legendary Pokemon. So if you’re worried you won’t have a home for Celebi before going to fight it, you’re in the clear. You’ll instantly unlock the camp for Celebi to stay at when you recruit it.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX Friend Bow
There is one caveat regarding recruiting Pokemon, however: recruiting shiny Pokemon. You can’t just see a shiny Pokemon and hope that it’ll join you when you beat it, unfortunately. You also need the Friend Bow, an item you equip to your team leader. Shiny Pokemon are not recruitable unless you have that equipped! Also make sure that the Pokemon you’re leading actually has the Friend Bow equipped, since you can change the leader Pokemon while in dungeons.
But even if you’re not Shiny collecting, having the Friend Bow equipped is a great idea. The bow offers a 10% increased chance of recruiting all Pokemon, so when you find it make sure to give it to a Pokemon you use a lot!
