How to Unlock New Pokemon for Free in Pokemon Unite

Pokemon Unite is a new free-to-play game from developers TiMi Studio Group and The Pokemon Company. This game takes the world of Pokemon and fuses it with various MOBA elements from games like DOTA 2 or Heroes of the Storm. Players pick from a roster of Pokemon, which serve as the game’s champions, and battle it out to score points for their team. Whichever team earns the most points or destroys all the enemy team’s point receptacles wins the match. Similar to other free MOBAS, players will need to grind if they want to unlock other Pokemon to use. This can be a bit of a headache if there’s only one or two you want but are unavailable from the start. So if you really want to play as the Alola Ninetails or Gengar, here’s how to unlock new Pokemon in Pokemon Unite.

How to Unlock Pokemon

There are a few ways you can unlock new Pokemon, with the most obvious being spending some in-game currency. Naturally, this is a free game so there have to be about seven hundred different currencies you need to manage, but the only two that actually matter are Aeos Games and Aeos Coins. The former is the premium currency you will spend real-world money on, while the latter is the in-game currency you earn through a variety of different ways. Both can be used to unlock different Pokemon in the store. Spending Aeos Coins should be your main method of unlocking Pokemon, as it’s pretty simple to earn enough to purchase one or two after a few hours of playing.

Players are limited to 2,100 Aeos Coins a week through just playing battles, however, you can also earn coins via the Trainer Level, Challenges, and completing tutorials in the Practice mode. You’ll want to make sure you focus on the challenges and tutorials first, as they offer a great way to earn a nice burst of Aeos Coins right away. The only unfortunate part is once you complete the daily challenges and tutorials you’ll be stuck grinding out games. Unsurprisingly, Pokemon cost between 6,000-10,000 Aeos Coins so you’ll need to really save once you are limited to only earning 2,100 coins a week. That being said, don’t feel like you need to buy every Pokemon and just focus on 1-2 that catch your interest. This should also save you from spending any real money.

Other ways to unlock Pokemon include completing all of the Daily Challenges and progressing through your Trainer Level. If you complete all of the DaiIy Challenges across six days you will unlock a Pokemon you can use forever. Additionally, you will unlock Slobro and Venasaur at Trainer Levels 2 and 5. Also if you just started playing at the time of the game’s Nintendo Switch release go to your Item Box by pressing X at the Main Menu. Select the Item Box and then open up the message there to receive Zeraora for free. Remember, once you obtain a Pokemon it’s free to use forever, so don’t worry about needing to rebuy it. I also recommend saving your Aeos Coins for any Pokemon you cannot earn by other means. Yeah, I want to play Crustle too (said no one ever) but it’s easier to just earn it through Daily Challenges.

It will take some time, but if you are diligent about your challenges and tutorials you should have enough coins for a new Pokemon after around 3-4 hours of playing Pokemon Unite.
