Pokemon Grass Type Guide - Weaknesses, Strengths, Counters

The strongest Grass type Pokemon in both Pokemon GO, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and their greatest weaknesses

As the list of Pokemon grows, and the number of Pokemon types with it, keeping up with how each type interacts with one another can be challenging. While type interactions are the same between mainline installments like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and Pokemon GO, their strengths and weaknesses are utilized differently, especially when it comes to which Pokemon you want to use to be the very best. The good news is we’re here to help with our handy Pokemon-type guides focusing on strengths, weaknesses, and counters. In this guide we’re going to take a look at the Grass-type specifically.

Pokemon Grass Type Weaknesses & Counters

Grass type Pokemon have five weaknesses: Bug, Fire, Flying, Ice, and Poison. You’ll want to use one of these if you’re trying to deal with a Grass-type Pokemon.

That means you’ll want to use strong Pokemon of those types.

  • Bug: If you want to chew up opposing Grass-types with Bug-type Pokemon, you have plenty of options. You’ll want to use Bug-types with high Attack and Special Attack stats like Scizor, Heracross, Yanmega, Kleavor, and Slither Wing. Grass’s weaknesses leave it open to be hit pretty hard by dual-type Pokemon too, like the Bug/Fire Volcarona or the Bug/Ice Frosmoth.
  • Fire: The most effective Fire-type picks to combat the Bug-type will be Flareon, Blaziken, Chandelure, Volcarona, Skeledirge, Ceruledge, or Iron Moth. Both Charizard and Talonflame will punish Grass-types effectively as well, as they’re both dual-type, covering Fire and Flying.
  • Flying: If you want to take down Grass-types with Flying-type Pokémon, you have a few options. Flying-types with high Attack and Special Attack stats like Dragonite, Staraptor, Braviary, Toucannon, or Flamigo will mow down Grass-types with ease.
  • Ice: If you want to freeze Grass-type opponents with Ice-type Pokémon, you have some great options. The best Ice-types to pick will be Weavile, Glaceon, Beartic, Crabominable, and Baxcalibur – they’ll shatter Grass-types with ease.
  • Poison: Poison-type Pokemon will easily eat through Grass-type defenses, and the Poison-type Pokemon you’ll have success with are Gengar, Toxicroak, Sneasler, and Revavroom. Plenty of Poison types have a secondary type that will punish Grass too, like Salazzle and Iron Moth’s Poison/Fire typing.

Pokemon Grass Type Strengths

If you’re looking to use Grass-type Pokemon, the good news is that they are strong against three common Pokemon types. Grass-type moves do double damage to any Ground, Rock, or Water Pokemon

These strengths make Grass-type Pokemon an excellent counter to some powerful opponents:

  • Ground: Donphan, Hippowdon, Krookodile, Ursaluna, Great Tusk, etc.
  • Rock: Tyranitar, Rampardos, Lycanroc, Stonjourner, Klawf, etc.
  • Water: Slowbro, Crawdaunt, Samurott, Clawitzer, Primarina, etc.

Grass-type Pokemon have the potential to severely damage several opponents, too. The following Pokemon take 4x damage from Grass-type attacks thanks to their dual-typing: Golem, Quagsire, Swampert, Whiscash, Gastrodon, Rhyperior, and Drednaw,

Best Grass Type Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet

The best Grass-type Pokemon you can use in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet depends on how you judge them. If you’re doing comparing highest Attack/Special Attack base stats, the top five are:

  1. Iron Leaves (130 Base Attack)
  2. Breloom (130 base Attack)
  3. Brute Bonnet (127 base Attack)
  4. Arboliva (125 base Special Attack)
  5. RIllaboom (125 base Attack)

Best Grass Type Pokemon in Pokemon GO

The best Grass type creatures in Pokemon GO depend on how you judge them. If you’re doing a straight up maximum CP comparison the top five are:

  1. Zarude (4,334)
  2. Kartana (4,156)
  3. Shaymin - Sky Forme (4,061)
  4. Tapu Bulu (3,865)
  5. Celebi (3,691)

The judgments change a bit when you’re actually battling, however. Mega Sceptile is by far the best Grass-type attacker in Pokemon GO, as long as it’s equipped with Bullet Seed and Frenzy Plant. Other strong Grass-type fighters are Kartana, Mega Venusaur, Zarude, Shadow Tangrowth, and Shadow Venusaur.
