Female Hrothgar Finally Revealed for FFXIV's Dawntrail

Say bye to the final gender lock, everyone!

After years of anticipation from fans, female Hrothgar are finally being added to Final Fantasy XIV. The reveal comes from the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Tokyo, along with plenty of other new content.

Our first glimpse of female Hrothgar comes from the newest version of Dawntrail's trailer. At the end, Alphinaud and Erenville are seen discussing their upcoming destination, and a brand new character chimes in and calls Tural her home. Her name is Wuk Lamat, and she's the daughter of Tural's ruler. We'll be meeting her in Patch 6.55, which is coming on Jan. 16. There's a good chance that she's the owner of the infamous mystery legs at the end of 6.5.

As for the lore, Hrothgar have been known to originate from Ilsabard, but they've also been revealed to hail from Yak T'el, which players will be able to visit in Dawntrail. Female Hrothgar in particular are known to be distinguishable from males due to their lithe musculature and predisposition to act as leaders.

When it comes to looks, fans have been divided on exactly what they want to see from female Hrothgar. Some had hopes that they would look similar to their male counterparts, with large, muscular builds resembling lions. Others wished for them to look similar to the female Ronso of Final Fantasy X, still very feline but with a more agile appearance. Ultimately, our first look at female Hrothgar is closer to the latter.

Hrothgar were introduced to the game with the Shadowbringers expansion, at the same time as Viera. Both of these races only had one gender option originally: male for Hrothgar, and female for Viera. Since then, the gender lock on Viera has been lifted with the release of Endwalker, and fans wondered when the same would be done for Hrothgar.

According to director and producer Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida, female Hrothgar will be the final playable race to be added to the game. If they do become playable immediately with the release of Patch 7.0, fans could be creating female Hrothgar characters as early as this summer.
