Nintendo has announced the latest seasonal update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and altogether it looks a little bit lighter than past events the company has been rolling out over the past year since the game launched on Switch.
The free update will go live on Thursday, January 28, and will bring Pavé to your island. The peacock will host Festivale, where he will dance on the island plaza. As he’s vibing to the music, feathers can be found around the island for you to collect with your bug catching net. Since Pavé is a peacock, these feathers are multi-colored and the goal of Festivale is to collect all of them for different rewards. Even if that reward is only Pavé doing a little jig.
That’s all there really is to Festivale, based on the trailer for the update. As a person who’s mostly bounced off Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I don’t think it’s going to be the thing to bring me back. However, I can’t lie that Pavé as a character has caught my eye as the gay icon Animal Crossing needs. Yes, there’s question about whether C.J. and Flick are an item, but Nintendo has tried its damndest to explain away their relationship as strictly professional.
But Doug Bowser, this Peacock is queer as heck, and I won’t be told otherwise. Look at that rainbow choker, and the flamboyant outfit that says “yes, I have Lady Gaga’s ‘Rain on Me’ choreography in my back pocket ready to go at a moment’s notice.” Pavé just oozes gay culture and I love that for him, for me, and for all of us, really. Where was he when players were using Animal Crossing: New Horizons to celebrate Pride during the coronavirus pandemic? He deserved to take part.

Also, at the end of the trailer there’s a hint that March’s free update will be a Super Mario-themed event, as the teaser sports the super mushroom and super star power ups from the series. So maybe there will be some Mario collectibles and furniture in store for New Horizons players in March. Is it possible for a Super Mario character to show up? That would be fun. Maybe it will be Mario in his cat suit from Super Mario 3D World to keep in line with the animal theme of Animal Crossing.
