Destiny 2 is Getting a 50-Wave Horde Mode

50 waves of enemies? Sub-objectives? Defensive turrets and trip wires? That's a horde mode.

Bungie's Destiny 2: Into the Light aims to fill the gap left by the delay of The Final Shape, the game's upcoming major expansion. In a March 19 livestream, Bungie revealed a new look at gameplay for the new Onslaught game mode, which will be available on April 9.

The livestream opened with some general lore details behind the game mode before launching into gameplay. Before Crow builds a bridge into the Traveler for the start of The Final Shape to combat the Witness, the goal is to bolster the Last City's defenses against enemy forces. You push forward with Shaxx's Red Jacks to establish a defensive beachhead.

Onslaught is a wave defense mode that takes place within the Last City. The Witness' forces are assaulting the City to distract from the mission into the Traveler. That means Fallen and Hive are the primary enemies in this while the other enemy races are doing other things in the Solar System.

Destiny 2: Into the Light Livestream 1 Recap

  • Onslaught is a wave defense game mode that takes place in the Midtown Crucible map with segments that take place in Pyramid ships
  • Developers promise more locations for Onslaught that have yet to be revealed
  • The playlist version is easier and lasts only 10 waves
  • The challenge version lasts up to 50 waves (5 sets of 10)
  • The Fireteam gets a reward chest after completing each set of 10 waves
  • You deploy and defend an ADU (Automatic Defense Unit) at one of three potential locations around the map
  • The location of the ADU changes every 10 waves (presumably based on the core 3 Control capture points?)
  • As you defeat enemies, you collect the Scrap currency that's used to purchase and upgrade defenses
  • The Fireteam collects scrap together but spends it individually (similar to The Coil)
  • Defenses include Sweeper Bot Decoys, Tripwires, and Turrets
  • Each of these defenses can be upgraded to Level 2 and Level 3
  • In between waves, you have 30 seconds to buy defenses
  • If you defeat Ultras that spawn, you can get ADU Batteries that can heal the ADU, but if the ADU is at full health, you get bonus Scrap
  • This mode does include Champions
  • Waves 6, 16, 26, 36, and 46 each send the Fireteam into a nearby Pyramind Ship to fight a boss-tier enemy. It's seemingly always an invincible Warden that can only be damaged after you dunk a rift.
  • In these encounters, you can capture points to summon defensive Turrets
  • Confirmed Loot:
    • Midnight Coup
    • Hung Jury SR4
  • Next week's stream includes:
    • Loot and gear (developers namedropped "The Brave Arsenal")
    • A new social hub
