Bungie cleared the names of a "small number" of wrongfully accused Destiny 2 cheaters, acknowledging issues with its ban detection system that led to improper bans. Tom Warren, a senior editor at The Verge, shared an update regarding Bungie's move to reverse the bans on Twitter.
In the post, Warren also shared a screenshot of an email that appeared to be from Bungie Help's Destiny Player Support, indicating the unnamed message recipient would not only get full access to their account back but would also get 5,000 Silver to spend at the Eververse Store.
The posted message states the player's account would be unbanned "effective immediately" and that they would see the 5,000 Silver amount credited to their account within a week.
"Along with a small number of other players, your account was inadvertently flagged as having tampered with client game functionality," it says. Adding, "While the overwhelming majority of these claims are accurate, we discovered that in extremely rare cases this detection may be triggered through no fault of the player. This error was determined as part of our auditing process and we acted as quickly as possible to validate the issue and rescind the number of inadvertent flags."
Bungie also shared that it had updated its detections to prevent the issue from happening again.
Warren posted the update just over a week after requesting Destiny 2 PVP players to reach out if they recently received an in-game message from Bungie indicating that they were subject to a two-week matchmaking ban. The message claimed that the temporary restriction was placed due to using software that could give an unfair advantage, despite players not using such software.
It is unclear how many players the ban detection issue impacted. While Destiny 2 Twitter is no stranger to players claiming they were unfairly banned for cheating, for now, some wrongly accused Guardians are now vindicated.
