When you’re starting out in Palworld, it can be overwhelming given the number of Pals, the huge world, and the progression ahead of you. As a result, when you get your first few Pal Spheres it can hard to know who to capture to join your Pal army. Luckily, there’s a few good candidates for starting Pals.
This guide will cover the best pals from the very early levels. This means levels one to around 15, and good enough to tackle the first few bosses and Alpha Pals, set up your base, and start your Palworld journey. As you level up you’ll find yourself outgrowing these Pals, but they’ll retain their utility, and you may never give them up!

Pengullet

Pengullet is definitely one of the first Pals you should capture. There’s a few reasons for this, but chief among them is his great low-level work suitability. He’s a Handiwork pal, so he’ll help with construction, but also has Transporting, Watering, and Cooling, which are useful in early levels.
Beyond this, he’s both an Ice and Water type Pal who has abilities that allow you to counter Fire and Dragon type Pals. This early utility will mean he’s indispensable as you start out your journey.
Cattiva

Cattiva can seem like a strange choice for an early game Pal, but actually has deceptively strong abilities. Its Punch Flurry actually deals 40 damage per strike, so it’s really effective at melting down bosses, especially at early levels. You’ll find you can actually cheese early bosses with just a Cattiva thanks to this ability.
Beyond its capabilities in battle, Cattiva has the Transporting, Handiwork, Gathering and Mining work abilities. This means they’re ideal for setting up an initial base, and then moving onto the Stone Pit as you advance in your game. The only downside is Cattivas seem to have a predisposition to negative traits such as Coward, and seem to slack off more than other Pals.
Lifmunk

Lifmunk is a great Pal for early game with his Grass typing and work abilities. One of the first Lumbering Pals you encounter, it can also do Medicine Production, Planting, Handiwork, and Gathering. Beyond this, Lifmunk is likely the first Pal you’ll get a piece of gun-based Pal Gear for — in this case Lifmunk’s Submachine Gun.
With the Submachine Gun, available at level 11, it is easy to make and turn your Lifmunk into a really effective Pal in combat, and perfect for early game bosses. Ignore the flavor text about them killing their masters after learning to use weapons though, that’s hopefully just a rumor.
Foxparks

Foxparks is another great early game Pal due to the fact they have low-level Pal Gear. You can pick up your Foxparks and use them as a flameflower after unlocking the Foxparks’ Harness at Level 6. This ability will make short work of low level enemies, and is great chip damage on bosses.
Foxparks doesn’t have great utility, but is still the better option over other early game fire types like Rooby and others. It can also be useful when exploring at night since it lights up the area.
Gumoss

Gumoss might seem like a strange choice for an early game Pal, as they have a lack of utility, but their ubiquity (they’re absolutely everywhere), and the fact they’re so easy to catch means you should grab one. They’re good for farming, as they’ll plant seeds for you, and their Ground secondary type means they’re perfect when you’re fighting the first bosses in the game.
Lamball

Despite being literally Pal number 001, Lamball is surprisingly versatile as an early game Pal. With a Handiwork and Transporting preference, they can make building your base and producing materials pretty easy in the early game.
Once you unlock the Ranch, simply retire your Lamballs to a life of producing copious amounts of Wool. A great and loyal Pal to start your journey with.
What next?
Frankly, some of the Pals listed here aren’t going to cut it as you advance. We’d recommend keeping some of the more utility focused ones in your party, and moving the rest to full time base pals. As you expand your base, you’ll need workers. After all, those Berry Plantations aren’t going to harvest themselves.
Instead, you can move on to capturing more powerful Pals, and ones that can provide you with transport abilities such as flying and riding.
